Red Carpet Screenings:
Wildwood - Laika Studios/ U.S. Premiere
After her baby brother is abducted by a murder of crows, headstrong teenager Prue McKeel (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) launches a desperate rescue mission into the Impassable Wilderness — an enchanted forest hidden just beyond Portland, Oregon. Joined by her hapless but loyal classmate Curtis Mehlberg (Jacob Tremblay), Prue navigates a world of talking animals, bandits and powerful figures driven by grief and ambition. As the pair is drawn into a conflict threatening the balance of the forest itself, Prue must discover the strength and belief she never knew she possessed. If she hopes to save her brother and protect Wildwood's fragile future, she will have to risk everything.
From Oscar®-nominated and BAFTA®-winning studio LAIKA (CORALINE), WILDWOOD is a sweeping adventure about love, sacrifice and the magic that reveals itself when we dare to look beyond the familiar.
The Mosquito Bowl - Netflix/ World Premiere
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, four of America's greatest college football stars — John McLaughry (Nicholas Galitzine), Bob Baumann (Bill Skarsgård), Tony Butkovich (Ray Nicholson) and David Schreiner (Tom Francis) — set fame aside to enlist in the Marines. Eager to serve, they are immediately pulled out of their idealistic youth and into the violent realities of World War II. Based on the book "The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II" by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Buzz Bissinger, THE MOSQUITO BOWL is directed by Peter Berg (LONE SURVIVOR, AFI FEST 2013; PATRIOTS DAY, AFI FEST 2016).
I Play Rocky - MGM
Academy Award®-winning director Peter Farrelly (GREEN BOOK, AFI FEST 2018) tells the electrifying true story of an unknown actor with an unshakable belief that he wasn't just meant to write 1976's ROCKY — he was meant to play Rocky Balboa. Told "no" at every turn, Sylvester Stallone (Anthony Ippolito) bets everything on himself, holding the line on playing the lead against seemingly impossible odds. Ippolito shines as the young Stallone, supported by a stellar cast that includes Tracy Letts, Stephan James, Matt Dillon, AnnaSophia Robb, P.J. Byrne, Toby Kebbell, Jay Duplass and Kiki Seto. I PLAY ROCKY reveals the ultimate underdog story behind the ultimate underdog movie.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Screening to be preceded by a conversation with AFI FEST Guest Artistic Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
With his 1968 sci-fi epic, Stanley Kubrick redefined the limits of filmmaking and cemented his legacy as one of the most revolutionary and influential directors of all time. Originally released in 70mm Cinerama roadshow format following the film's world premiere on April 2, 1968, at the Uptown Theater in Washington, DC, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY ignited the imaginations of critics and audiences alike, and its impact continues to resonate to this day. Kubrick's dazzling, Academy Award®–winning achievement is a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion. Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke) first visits man's prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia into colonized space and ultimately whisks astronaut David Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted territory, perhaps even into immortality. "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is an awesome journey unlike any other.
Ray Gunn - Netflix
A decades-in-the-making passion project from Oscar® winner and visionary Brad Bird, RAY GUNN is a retro-futuristic neo-noir mystery. In the city of Metropia, humans and aliens live in uneasy coexistence. Technological marvels abound, but so does danger. Dedicated, old-school private eye Ray Gunn (voiced by Sam Rockwell) and his resourceful alien associate Eyera (Tom Waits) become embroiled in a case involving jealousy, greed and murder, and a mysterious connection to pop star Venus Nova (Scarlett Johansson).
Being Heumann - Apple
They wouldn't take Judy Heumann's phone calls, so she took their building. In 1977, a young disabled woman (Ruth Madeley) and a scrappy coalition of outsiders decide they've had enough. What begins as one impulsive act becomes the longest occupation of a federal building in American history, as hundreds spontaneously seize government offices and refuse to leave until the bureaucrat in their way (Mark Ruffalo) takes action. Bringing rebellion in all its forms to the hallowed halls, a movement's accidental leaders struggle to find their path forward where none has ever been paved for them. Directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Siân Heder (AFI DWW+ Class of 2005) and based on true events, BEING HEUMANN is the revolutionary, irreverent and deeply human story of the least likely people trying to pull off the impossible and change the lives of millions.
