This August, Muirfield will experience the AIG Women's Open for the first time. The elite female players will converge on this East Lothian icon, a powerful reflection of the ascendency of women's golf that its premier events are staged at the world's greatest courses. This is one not to be missed.
Hosted by Carnoustie in 2021, and now Muirfield in 2022, the AIG Women's Open is played on serious courses with undisputed championship pedigree, and ones that inspire these phenomenal players to great feats. For the fans, either in armchairs at home or in the stands on-site, it's a mouthwatering prospect. This exciting event is part of an exploration of Scotland, both its cultural and golf history.
Last year, it was Anna Nordqvist who prevailed, and she'll return to Scotland this year to defend. Carnoustie is a tough course and it showed some of its infamous teeth last year, but ultimately presented the kind of pure, fair test of golf that provides entertainment and worthy winners. Expect more of the same at Muirfield, which many view to be the fairest of those on The Open's rota. Alongside Sweden's Nordqvist, as many as 31 other nations were represented in 2021, an indicator of the development of the women's game and its global nature.
If it's the AIGWO that brings you to Scotland, then also bringing your clubs is an obvious choice. Stay in historic Edinburgh, and from there, explore the golfing landscapes of both East Lothian and Fife, like Dumbarnie Links, a highly ranked Fife layout that's just a couple of years old. Don't miss Kilspindie, an enchanting little seaside course just up the coast from Muirfield, and Dunbar, a spectacular links that's some 150 years old.
These golfing wonders represent the perfect excuse to head to Edinburgh this August. It's a time when Scotland's capital city comes alive, courtesy of its renowned Festival, a near month-long celebration of the performing arts including comedians, serious stage actors, and everything in between. It's a cast of thousands from around the globe, all ready to entertain the equally international visiting audiences. It's a unique experience you won't want to miss.
The stages are set in Edinburgh at Muirfield AIG Women's Open.
Now all you need is a ticket.
